CHINESE NOISE VOICES FROM THE SCENE 006

MORDEKAISER

Rice, Chicken & Ramen

01 Introduction

This article is part of Chinese Noise, a living archive exploring Chinese identity, underground music and cultural memory through 25 years of Hong Kong Violence.

For this edition, we sat down with Mordekaiser, producer, DJ and one of the driving forces behind Cartel+, a project built together with HKV and OTM to support the underground hardcore community.

His introduction to HKV did not begin through a record or a festival. It started during a vinyl expo at Skateland Rotterdam, where he was introduced to members of the HKV crew.

Instead of talking about hardcore, one of his first conversations revolved around the different ways to prepare rice and chicken.

Later that day, a visit to a ramen restaurant resulted in Mordekaiser’s first attempt at eating with chopsticks while surrounded by Chinese diners.

Awkward, intimidating and funny all at once.

Looking back, it perfectly captures his introduction to HKV.

"It instantly felt like family."

That first meeting eventually led to deeper involvement with HKV, PhonkCartel and Cartel+, while opening the door to collaborations and friendships that continue to this day.

On July 18, Mordekaiser joins the HKV Stage at Dominator Festival 2026 alongside Speedfolter for their first ever B2B performance.

02 Finding HKV

What started as a casual introduction quickly grew into active involvement within the HKV community.

"From that moment on I started getting more involved on the merch side, which later also led to creating Cartel+ together with HKV and Maarten from OTM."

Over the years, that involvement evolved from helping behind the scenes into building projects that support the wider underground hardcore community.

What started with a conversation at a vinyl expo eventually became a long-term collaboration within the HKV family.

03 My Favorite HKV Track

Nukom – Fuck Bass

For Mordekaiser, one track immediately comes to mind.

"For me, that track perfectly captures the nasty, gritty and underground side of what HKV stands for."

Interestingly, he did not even realise it was an HKV release when he first discovered it.

"At first, I did not even know it was released on HKV, but once I found out, everything made sense."

It perfectly represented the raw and uncompromising feeling he associates with the label.

There is one release that holds extra personal meaning for him:

Speedfolter & Mordekaiser – No Competition

"My own first release on HKV will always have a special place for me."

The track marked the first collaboration between two artists who had known each other for more than a decade.

"It was the first collaboration with Speedfolter after knowing each other for more than ten years, both growing up in Zeeland and sharing the same taste for the rougher side of hardcore."

For Mordekaiser, releasing the track through HKV felt like everything came full circle.

04 Back On The HKV Stage

This year, Mordekaiser returns to the HKV Stage at Dominator Festival.

This time, together with Speedfolter.

For him, the occasion carries extra meaning because it marks the first ever B2B performance between the two.

"This one feels special, because it will be the first time Speedfolter and I stand behind the decks together."

The collaboration has been years in the making.

"We have been looking for the right opportunity to do this for years, because we both have a strong love for the same kind of terror tracks: raw, dark and still mixable in a technical way."

Fans can expect a set focused on technical mixing, fast transitions and underground energy.

"People can expect a set with a lot of cuts, fast transitions and that rougher hardcore sound you normally do not hear on the bigger festival stages."

One thing is clear.

"We are not there to play it safe. We want to bring that raw underground energy and show the side of hardcore that still feels dangerous, niche and not made for everyone."
05 Learning From The Generations Before

According to Mordekaiser, one of the biggest lessons passed on by the older generation is independence.

"I think the older generation of HKV passed on the mindset of not giving a shit in the best possible way."

For him, that mentality became increasingly important as he became more involved with the scene himself.

"They showed that you do not have to follow the mainstream or act like sheep just to reach bigger stages. You can build something real by staying true to your own sound and your own vision."

That attitude remains one of the things he admires most about HKV.

For Mordekaiser, it proves that authenticity will always outlast trends.

06 What HKV Means To Me

For Mordekaiser, HKV has always been about more than music.

"If HKV did not exist, I probably would never have met people like Kin."

Over the years, those relationships grew into friendships, collaborations and shared projects.

"They surround themselves with people who are willing to work hard and stay true to their own vision, especially within the more niche and underground side of hardcore."

For him, HKV is a platform that creates opportunities for artists who choose their own path.

"It is a platform that creates opportunities for producers and artists who make music that does not necessarily fit the usual hardcore crowd."

More importantly, it gives those artists a place where they do not have to compromise.

"It gives space to people who choose their own path instead of adjusting themselves to become more accessible."
07 Favorite HKV Merch

For Mordekaiser, one item stands above the rest.

HKV x Madness T-Shirt

"My favorite piece is the HKV x Madness collab T-shirt."

At that time, he was still part of the This is Madness organisation, a period that played an important role in his journey through hardcore.

"Now that I am transitioning more into the HKV, PhonkCartel and Cartel+ side of things, that shirt feels like a bridge between two important worlds in my journey."
"It represents where I came from, but also connects to where things are going now."
08 One Word

If he had to describe HKV using a single word?

UNCOMPROMISING
"HKV does not soften itself to become more accessible. It does not try to please everyone, follow trends or polish away the rough edges."

For Mordekaiser, that attitude has always defined the platform.

09 A Message To HKV

Twenty-five years is a huge milestone for such a unique platform in the hardcore scene.

"The fact that HKV has kept the same vision for 25 years says everything."

For Mordekaiser, that consistency is what makes HKV special.

"I believe the new generation will carry that vision forward for the next 25 years."

Shoutout to everyone who helped build HKV into what it is today and everyone who will continue carrying it into the future.
